Definition and History

Diaspora - a group of people who spread from one original country to other countries. The historical definition refers to the moving of Jews from Israel.

“Until only a few decades ago, “diaspora” was a relatively esoteric word restricted in meaning to the historical dispersion of particular communities around the Mediterranean basin. Since then, it has become a privileged term of reference in scholarship, journalism, and popular discourse, used broadly and at times indiscriminately to denote a number of different kinds of movement and situations of mobility among human populations. “Diaspora” is a Greek word, a combination of the prefix dia- (meaning “through”) and the verb sperein (meaning “to sow” or “to scatter”).”Keywords For American Cultural Studies by Brent Hayes Edwards.

I am posting here as Mark is not on Discord.

I adopted Topics Teams and have never fully understood the goals for the Diaspora Team. Both of you were members of the team evidently from its beginning.

What work has been done?

Have either of you worked on Diaspora on another project?

What needs to be changed/improved?

What do you need from me?

Diaspora for me has meant identifying those born in Wales and moved elsewhere (you know - a "spreading out") and doing my best to source the profiles adequately. Sometimes I find the records on the Wales side difficult to identify, so more seems to be done on the post-immigration side, than the pre-emigration. (It doesn't stop me from occasionally working on non-diaspora persons. It seems to depend on the rabbits.) I am more comfortable with this than being on a regional team.

Without checking, I think I'm on Diaspora for Scotland, as well.

It's a "funny" thing - Scots who emigrate are still recognisably Scottish. Europeans also. My first father-in-law, the one who classified himself as a "Welsh Cockney", still had a strong Londoner accent even after 20-plus years in Australia. My Ireland-born (to an English soldier family) English (oh, so VERY English) grandmother still had her (learnt) plummy English accent after almost 70 years of living in Australia.

But the Welsh who emigrate seem to fade into the background -- unless you have an ear that picks up on the sing-song "lilt" in their speaking pattern. Most people think they are English. (Oh, the HORROR!)

Sometimes, without documents leading back, it can be difficult to trace Welsh diaspora folk, because they fade. And it's no easier to (reliably) document an Evans, or a Jones, elsewhere than it is "back home". Some names just don't "stand out" the way a Manipuringaspoor would.

I've just seen more "evidence" of this, with every "source" listed as "Wales-place-name, England". Not a single one said "Wales". So "placename, Glamorganshire, England", or "Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, England", or "placename, Monmouthshire, England".

I could understand it being "United Kingdom", but to ignore that Wales is not England just seemed so . . so . . I am lost for words.

However, Notable Wales-born actor Ivor Barry now has a profile, despite the frustration I am still feeling regards sources for his parents.

Other alternate names are Rees ap Rees and Rhys ap Rhys (Rhys son of Rhys, the Welsh ap is translated son of). It is easy to see how Rees ap Rees became Rees Prees. I do not speak Welsh but I had for a long time thought that Prees was derived from ap Rees, especially since Rees Prees could not read or write and realized that the English speaking people listening to Welsh name could easily misunderstand the spoken Rees ap Rees. I would like to post a link to this information my online family trees. The ISTG Home Page is also good place to look for leads of Immigrants to the colonies.

Here is an example for my 7th great grandfather Rees Prees. Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild Ship Vine The Vine, 17 July 1684 Passengers arriving on the ship "Vine" of Liverpool, William Preeson, Master, sailing from Doleyshere*(Dolesororen), Merionethshire, England with a large party bound for the Welsh Tract, and arrived at Philadelphia 17 July 1684.

This page is hard to find.

I found an article "The History of Gallia County" published 1882 [1] that has ten pages mentioning Wales and nine more mentioning Welsh. Each of these has multiple occurrences of Wales. It also has a paragraph titled "THE WELSH SETTLEMENT IN GALLIA COUNTY". Although it not a primary source, many of the people mentioned were still living at the time the article was pulished. Just "Search in this text" for Wales and Welsh and you will find many Welsh immigrants to Ohio. Joel Priest

I am doing well. Not currently working on any Wales-related profiles, although I keep coming across Wales references to others profiles, so my notes files keep getting larger. Not my own brick wall, but I do liken trying to find one Evans in Wales is like trying to find one Smith in England, or one particular Scholefield in Yorkshire.
